Privacy
What The Retro Project knows about you, in plain words. Last updated 1 August 2026.
What we keep
- Your email address, if you gave us one. You can use the app without one.
- A subscription reference from Stripe, so we know you have paid. We never see or store your card.
Payment is handled entirely by Stripe.
- A name for each computer you play on (the name your computer already calls itself), so you can
see your own devices and we can honour one subscription per person.
- Which games you started and for how long, and whether a game failed to start.
- What kind of computer you play on: operating system, processor model, memory and free disk space.
This is how we know whether a game will run well for you.
- Your country, worked out from your connection.
- Your username and friend code, if you use the friends and online play features, and who your
friends are.
Your internet address
We do not store your internet address alongside what you do. Before anything is recorded, it is turned
into a scrambled value that cannot be turned back, and only that is kept. It lets us count people without
identifying them.
The one exception is our servers' own operational logs, which record real addresses the way every
internet service does, because online play cannot be repaired without them. Those logs are deleted
automatically after fourteen days.
What we never do
- We do not sell anything about you, to anybody, ever.
- We do not track you across other websites, and there are no advertising trackers in the app.
- We do not read your files. The app only touches its own folder and the games you download from us.
- We do not listen to your microphone outside a race. Voice chat runs only while you are playing online
with friends, and we do not record it or keep it.
Who else is involved
- Stripe takes payments and holds your card details. We never receive them.
- Amazon Web Services and Cloudflare host the servers and store the game files.
Getting your data, or getting rid of it
Write to support@theretroproject.com and ask. We will tell you everything we
hold about you, or delete it, within 30 days. If you delete your account we remove your email, your
username, your friends and your device names. Anonymous counts that can no longer be linked to you may
remain.
Deleting your data does not cancel your subscription: cancel that first, or ask us to do both.
Children
This is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly keep anything about them.
Changes
If this changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the app will say so.
